Event

2022 North Pole Express
All tickets go on sale at midnight, November 1, 2022.

Your trip to the North Pole begins at the Midwest Central Railroad's North Depot in McMillan Park in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.  You will need to arrive about 20 minutes before the event begins to pick up your official tickets at the North Depot and receive your coach assignments for the train.  Railroad conductors will help you board the express train to your destination and find your seat on the coaches.  As you ride through the wintery countryside on the way to the North Pole you will listen to The Polar Express story written by Chris Van Allsburg. When the story is finished you will have arrived at the North Pole.

Once you arrive at the North Pole, there are many activities in which to participate.  On the top of most children's to-do lists is a visit to Railroad Santa, located in the Christmas Caboose at the North Pole.  Children can share their Christmas wish lists with Santa; and children and adults alike will receive a silver bell from Santa - just be careful not to let the bell slip through a hole in your pocket!  Only those who truly believe will be able to hear the bell ring.

In our craft room, children can make a simple Christmas ornament to take home.  Out in the main building, there are model trains on wooden platforms and children can use a controller to run the model trains around the tracks.  The Snow Princess can also be found in the main building and has a small gift for the children who visit the North Pole.

Just as in the story, hot cocoa will be served, along with Christmas cookies.  These are available at the ticket counter in the South Station which is next to the craft room, and are included in the price of the event.  Also included in the event price is a family photo to commemorate your visit to the North Pole.  Our photographer will take your family's photo in front of our special North Pole display, and before your visit ends, your photo will be ready to take home. Each group will receive one free picture and additional pictures may be purchased for $5.00 each, and they must be purchased when the picture is taken.

No trip to the North Pole would be complete without a visit to Midwest Central Railroad's Red Caboose Gift Shop!  Train-related items for sale include model trains, train toys (including a selection of Thomas the Tank Engine items), and train books.  Sweatshirts, t-shirts, cups, mugs, key chains; if there is a train on it, the Gift Shop probably has it! During our North Pole Express event the Gift Shop also has a selection of train-related Christmas ornaments and decorations.

Toward the end of your visit, an announcement will let you know it is time to board the train for the trip back from the North Pole.  In just a few minutes you will be back at the North Depot, and on your way home, with happy memories of your visit to Santa and the North Pole!

Children 0 month to 18 months do not need a ticket.  Everyone over the age of 18 months must have a ticket. If you have a several families that wish to ride on the same coach please list the names of the families in the memo section for purchasing.

North Pole Express is a smoke free environment (except for the locomotive!)

Handicapped accommodations are possible - let us know what you need. Just send us an email: NPE@mcrr.org.

All Sales Are Final - our trains operate no matter the weather.

A few tips to remember for your trip to the North Pole:

The event lasts approximately two hours, including the train ride to the North Pole, the visit to the North Pole, and the train ride back to the North Depot.

Restrooms:  There is only a porta-potty available at the North Depot where you board the train.  Two indoor restrooms are available at the North Pole (South Station).  There are no restrooms on the train itself.

Activities at the North Pole take place in Midwest Central Railroad's South Station, so you will be indoors, but only some parts of the building are heated, so please dress warmly for your visit.  The coaches on the train are not heated.

If you want to use GPS to find the North Depot (where you board the train), please enter the address:  902 S. Walnut Street, Mt. Pleasant, IA.  This is the address for the First Presbyterian Church, which is located across the street from the McMillan Park entrance closest to the North Depot.  There will be signs along Walnut Street and inside McMillan Park to direct you to the North Depot and parking area.  If you enter Midwest Central Railroad into your GPS, you will end up at the Railroad shop and office, and you may miss your train!

After you have visited the North Pole Express event, we would like to invite you to visit the Mt. Pleasant Festival of Lights.  More details concerning that event are located at https://www.oldthreshers.com/festival-of-lights/.
